About

Sufyan Hussain is a London based clinician and academic currently working as a consultant Diabetes and Endocrine Physician in one of the UK’s leading diabetes services at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London. Sufyan has a specialist interest in the management of type 1 diabetes, including the application and clinical implementation of novel therapies and technologies, such as closed-loop automated insulin delivery systems and cell therapy.
Sufyan graduated from the University of Cambridge, served as a visiting scholar at Harvard Medical School, completed his PhD in molecular neurophysiology with Sir Professor Steve Bloom at Imperial College London and undertook his post-graduate clinical training in London teaching hospitals. He was appointed a Darzi Fellow in Clinical Leadership working on projects related to integrated care and digital health. He is a recipient of several training awards and prizes, has published over 40 research papers and contributed to several textbooks, including “Insulin Pump and CGM Made Easy”, which was shortlisted for the BMA medical textbook of the year.

His current research interests in type 1 diabetes include

Automated insulin delivery systems
Cell therapy in diabetes
Relationship between mental health and hypoglycaemia awareness
Metabolic effects of fasting
Impact of health inequalities on outcomes using diabetes technologies.
He has over 30 years personal experience of living with type 1 diabetes and is passionate about improving care and advocacy for diabetes. He contributes to several national and international support programs for people with type 1 diabetes. He has been invited to present at the UK parliament on several occasions on aspects related to type 1 diabetes care, and his work has been presented and covered by national and international media. His profile was recently covered by the leading journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinolog
